# Appeal to Authority

*Also known as: argumentum ad verecundiam*

An appeal to authority treats a claim as established because an authoritative figure asserted it, substituting the speaker's standing for actual evidence. It becomes fallacious when the authority is outside their field, when experts genuinely disagree, or when a single name is offered in place of the underlying research.

Treating a claim as true merely because an authority endorses it — especially when the authority is biased, anonymous, or speaking outside their expertise.

*Example: "A famous actor says this cleanse detoxifies your liver, so it must work" — fame isn't medical expertise.*

## What it looks like

**In a headline about food safety**

> Nobel Prize-winning physicist declares genetically modified foods perfectly safe.

*Why it fails:* A Nobel in physics certifies mastery of physics, not genetics or toxicology. Authority is domain-specific and does not transfer across field lines, however distinguished the holder.

**In a marketing claim**

> Nine out of ten dentists recommend this toothpaste.

*Why it fails:* Nothing is said about how the dentists were selected, what they were asked, or what they compared it to. An unexamined survey of credentialed people is not evidence about the product.

**In a workplace disagreement**

> The CTO says this architecture is the right call, so the discussion is over.

*Why it fails:* Seniority settles who decides, not what is true. The engineer's specific objection about failure modes still has a correct answer, and rank does not supply it.

Which of these is a legitimate appeal to authority rather than a fallacy?

A. A celebrated novelist states that a particular cancer treatment is ineffective
B. A structural engineer, citing the relevant building code and load calculations, states that a proposed beam is undersized
C. A famous athlete endorses an investment platform
D. A physicist asserts that a specific economic policy will reduce inflation

**Answer: B.** Option B satisfies the conditions: the person is an expert in the actual domain, the claim falls inside that domain, and the reasoning is offered alongside the credential so it can be checked. The others each transfer standing from one field to an unrelated one. Note that a legitimate appeal still is not proof — expert testimony is good evidence, and it remains defeasible by better evidence.

A study is dismissed with: "But 97% of climate scientists agree on this." Is citing consensus a fallacy?

A. Yes, always — consensus is just an appeal to authority at scale
B. No — a genuine expert consensus in the relevant field is meaningful evidence, though it does not make the claim immune from revision

D. No, because a majority is always correct

**Answer: B.** Consensus among domain experts is real evidence: it usually reflects convergent findings across many independent lines of work, which is much stronger than any one authority's say-so. Option A collapses a useful distinction; option D overclaims in the other direction, since consensus has been wrong before and is revisable. The reasonable position sits between: strong evidence, not proof.

What are the three main conditions for an appeal to authority to be legitimate?

A. The authority is famous, widely quoted, and confident
B. The authority is an expert in the relevant field, the field has genuine consensus on the point, and the claim is checkable against the underlying evidence

**Answer: B.** Relevance of expertise, existence of consensus, and checkability are what do the work. Option C mistakes credential markers for these conditions: a doctorate in one field says nothing about another, and university employment is not the point. Fame and confidence, in option A, are if anything negatively correlated with reliability, since both are rewarded independently of accuracy.

Someone says: "My doctor told me this supplement works, and she went to Harvard." Which part is the weakest support?

A. That she is a doctor, since medical training is irrelevant to supplements
B. That she went to Harvard, since where she trained says nothing about whether this specific claim is backed by trials
C. That it was told to you personally rather than published
D. Nothing is weak here; a doctor's advice is sufficient

**Answer: B.** The institution is doing rhetorical work while carrying no evidential weight — a Harvard degree is a fact about her education twenty years ago, not about this supplement's trial data. Her being a doctor is genuinely relevant, so option A goes too far. The useful follow-up is not about her credentials at all: what is the evidence, and where can it be read?

### Question 5

Why is it a mistake to conclude that a claim is false because it was supported by a fallacious appeal to authority?

A. Because authorities are usually right anyway
B. Because a bad argument for a claim does not make the claim false — the question simply remains open
C. Because it would be rude to the authority
D. Because appeals to authority are never truly fallacious

**Answer: B.** This is the fallacy fallacy, and it catches people who have just learned to spot fallacies. Identifying that an argument fails tells you the conclusion is unsupported by that argument — not that it is wrong. A celebrity might endorse a genuinely effective product. Spotting the bad reasoning moves the question back to the evidence; it does not answer it.

### What is the difference between appeal to authority and appeal to popularity?

Appeal to authority cites a qualified individual or body; appeal to popularity (bandwagon) cites how many people believe something. Expert consensus can look like both but is closer to the former, because its weight comes from independent expert scrutiny rather than from headcount among the general public.

### How should I handle an appeal to authority in practice?

Ask two questions: is this person an expert in this specific field, and what is the evidence behind what they said? A genuine expert can usually point you to the work. If the credential is offered instead of the reasoning rather than alongside it, that is the signal to press further.
