**In a conversation about travel**

> I'd rather drive than fly — you're always hearing about plane crashes.

*Why it fails:* Plane crashes are reported globally and remembered; road deaths are frequent and locally reported. Ease of recall tracks coverage rather than rate, and here the two point opposite ways.

**In a discussion about crime**

> Crime is clearly getting worse — look at what's on the news every night.

*Why it fails:* News volume reflects editorial selection and audience attention, not incidence. Recall of reported incidents can rise while the underlying rate falls.

**In a product retrospective**

> Our biggest risk is a security breach — that's what everyone talks about.

*Why it fails:* Salience is standing in for a risk assessment. The failures that actually take systems down are often unglamorous and therefore under-discussed and under-planned-for.
