# Framing Effect

The framing effect is a change in preference caused by how equivalent information is presented rather than by its content. Describing an outcome in terms of gains or of losses shifts choices even when the underlying facts are identical, which means presentation is doing work that the evidence is not.

Reaching different conclusions from the same information depending on how it is worded or presented — for example, '90% survive' versus '10% die.'

*Example: 'This surgery has a 90% survival rate' feels far safer than 'a 10% chance of death,' though they're identical.*

## What it looks like

**On food packaging**

> 90% fat free.

*Why it fails:* Identical to 10% fat, but the gain frame produces markedly more favourable judgements. Nothing about the product differs between the two descriptions.

**In a medical consultation**

> Ninety percent of patients survive this operation.

*Why it fails:* Equivalent to a 10% mortality rate, yet patients and clinicians consent at different rates depending on which is stated. The clinical facts are unchanged.

**In a pricing decision**

> Pay by card and there's a 3% surcharge.

*Why it fails:* Logically the same as a 3% cash discount, but the surcharge frame reads as a penalty and suppresses card use far more than the discount frame encourages cash.

When the same options are framed as 400 dying for certain versus a one-third chance nobody dies, most switch to the gamble. What does this show?

No. Some frame must be chosen for any communication, so framing is unavoidable rather than inherently deceptive. ### How is framing different from anchoring?

Anchoring involves a specific number pulling a numerical estimate toward it. Framing involves how equivalent information is described — as gain or loss, survival or mortality — shifting preference without any anchor value. Both are presentation effects, but they operate through different routes.

### Does the framing effect replicate reliably?

Risky-choice framing of the Asian disease type is among the more reliably replicated effects in judgement research, though magnitude varies with domain, stakes, and population. Some specific framing paradigms have weaker records, so the general phenomenon is solid while individual reported effect sizes deserve caution.
