# Motivated Reasoning

Motivated reasoning is reasoning aimed at reaching a preferred conclusion, where what you want to be true shapes which evidence feels persuasive and which arguments feel strong. The process feels like ordinary evaluation from the inside, because the bias operates on how evidence is weighed rather than on whether it is examined.

## What it looks like

**In a job search**

> Every piece of good news about this company feels convincing, and the red flags all seem minor.

*Why it fails:* Wanting the offer sets the standard of proof asymmetrically. Positive signals pass unexamined while negative ones attract objections that would not otherwise occur to you.

**In a discussion of a health habit**

> That study on the risks used a small sample, but the one showing benefits is really solid.

*Why it fails:* Methodological scrutiny is being applied selectively. If sample size disqualifies one study it should be applied to both, and often the favoured study is smaller.

**In evaluating one's own work**

> The metrics that improved are the ones that really matter; the others are noisy.

*Why it fails:* Which metrics matter is being decided after seeing the results. Specifying the important measures beforehand would have prevented the outcome from selecting the criterion.

No. Lying involves knowing the truth and stating otherwise. Motivated reasoning produces sincere belief — the person genuinely finds their conclusion well supported, because the weighing that produced it was skewed by preference rather than by any intent to deceive themselves or others.

### Does being intelligent protect against motivated reasoning?

Not reliably, and some research suggests analytical skill can be recruited to build better rationalizations for preferred conclusions. What helps is structural rather than cognitive: pre-committing to standards, seeking disagreement, and separating who decides from who benefits.

### How do I tell whether I am reasoning or rationalizing?

Check whether your evidentiary standard is stable. If you would accept this quality of evidence for a conclusion you disliked, you are reasoning. If you find yourself scrutinizing only the findings that go the wrong way, the preference is doing the work rather than the evidence.
