A slippery slope fallacy claims one modest step will inevitably lead to an extreme outcome, without establishing that each link in the chain actually follows. The argument borrows its force from the alarming endpoint while skipping the work of showing the sequence is likely rather than merely imaginable.

Claiming that a relatively small first step will inevitably trigger a chain of significant (usually negative) consequences, without evidence for the chain.

*Example: "If we let students retake one exam, soon they'll expect to retake everything and grades will mean nothing."*

## What it looks like

**In a debate about workplace flexibility**

> If we let one team work from home, soon nobody will come in, the culture will collapse, and the company will fail.

*Why it fails:* Three transitions are asserted and none is supported. Many organizations run hybrid arrangements indefinitely without collapse, which shows the first step does not force the second.

**In an argument about content moderation**

> Remove one post and you're on the road to banning every opinion anyone dislikes.

*Why it fails:* It treats moderation as having no stable middle. In practice, published rules and appeals processes are exactly the mechanisms that hold a policy at a chosen point rather than sliding.

**In a family discussion about a curfew**

> If we extend her curfew by an hour, next she'll be staying out all night and dropping out of school.

*Why it fails:* The endpoint does the persuading while the chain goes unexamined. One extra hour and dropping out are connected by nothing but a series of unstated and unlikely leaps.
