Cognitive biases are systematic patterns of deviation from rational judgment. They are not random mistakes — they are the predictable side-effects of mental shortcuts that usually serve us well, which is what makes them so hard to notice. The modern research program in cognitive bias began with Tversky and Kahneman in the 1970s and now spans behavioral economics, social psychology, and decision science. The exercises in this category cover the biases that show up most often in real-world decisions: anchoring, availability, confirmation, hindsight, sunk cost, status quo, framing effects, and dozens more.

Critically, this category is not about memorizing a list of biases. Decades of research on debiasing show that people who can name a bias on a multiple-choice test are not measurably better at avoiding it in their own decisions. What works is procedural — building decision habits that make the bias structurally harder to commit. Each exercise here pairs a realistic scenario with explanations that include the underlying bias, the psychological mechanism, and a concrete debiasing strategy you can use the next time the same situation arises.

Beginners should start with confirmation bias and availability heuristic — these two account for an outsize share of everyday reasoning errors and form the foundation for understanding the rest. Intermediate exercises move into anchoring, framing, and probability-related biases. Advanced exercises cover the social and motivated-reasoning biases, which are harder to catch because they feel like ordinary judgment.

Why this skill matters

Cognitive biases drive most predictable failures in personal and organizational decision-making. Investment portfolios suffer from disposition effect and overconfidence; hiring suffers from confirmation bias and anchoring on irrelevant cues; medical diagnosis suffers from availability and base-rate neglect. Studies of expert decision-making (Kahneman, Klein) consistently find that experts in well-structured domains develop intuitions that bypass the worst biases, but in less-structured domains — strategy, forecasting, hiring — even experienced professionals are barely better than novices.

The practice value is asymmetric. Catching one major biased decision per year — refusing to throw good money after bad on a sunk-cost project, declining to anchor on the seller's first number, overruling a strong but unreliable gut feeling — easily justifies the time investment. The exercises also have a meta-effect: people who study biases develop healthier epistemic humility about their own judgments, which protects against the largest bias of all, the bias blind spot (Pronin et al., 2002), in which people consistently rate themselves as less biased than average.

Knowing names without changing behavior

The most common failure mode in bias study is treating the names as trivia. You can recite all 50 biases on Wikipedia and still anchor on a salary negotiation. Behavioral change requires procedure: pre-commitment, decision journals, written counterfactuals, independent reference classes.

Bias spotting as a debate weapon

It is tempting to accuse opponents of confirmation bias, motivated reasoning, or whatever else fits — and miss the same biases in yourself. The exercises in this category are most useful when applied to your own past decisions, not to other people's positions.

Treating biases as flaws to eliminate

Most cognitive shortcuts work most of the time — that is why they exist. The goal is not to override every intuition but to recognize the specific situations where the shortcut systematically fails (low base rates, novel contexts, motivated outcomes) and slow down only for those.

Confusing biases with logical fallacies

Frequently asked questions

Will doing these exercises actually make me less biased?

Partially. Research on debiasing (Lilienfeld, Ammirati & Landfield, 2009) shows that bias education alone produces modest behavior change. The bigger gains come from combining bias awareness with procedural changes — checklists, pre-commitment, structured decision frameworks. The exercises are designed to support both: they teach the patterns and they give you concrete debiasing strategies.

What is the difference between a bias and a heuristic?

A heuristic is a mental shortcut — fast, frugal, usually good-enough. A bias is the systematic error that the heuristic produces in specific conditions. The availability heuristic (judging frequency by ease of recall) is mostly useful; the availability bias is the predictable error it causes when memorable events are not actually more common.

Are some biases worse than others?

Yes. Confirmation bias and availability heuristic produce the largest aggregate error in everyday reasoning. Anchoring causes the most damage in negotiations and quantitative estimates. Sunk-cost and status-quo biases dominate organizational decision-making. If you only have time to internalize a handful, those are the high-impact set.

Can I be biased and still make good decisions?

Routinely. Most decisions are low-stakes and the biases cancel out. The biases matter most in high-consequence, novel, or emotionally charged decisions — which happens to be where people are most reluctant to slow down. The mitigation strategy is to identify in advance which decisions deserve the slow-thinking process, not to try to debiase every choice.
