Availability Heuristic

The availability heuristic judges how likely something is by how easily examples come to mind. Because vivid, recent, and heavily reported events are recalled more readily than common ones, this shortcut systematically overstates dramatic risks and understates mundane ones that rarely make the news.

I'd rather drive than fly — you're always hearing about plane crashes.

Why it fails: Plane crashes are reported globally and remembered; road deaths are frequent and locally reported. Ease of recall tracks coverage rather than rate, and here the two point opposite ways.

In a discussion about crime

Crime is clearly getting worse — look at what's on the news every night.

Why it fails: News volume reflects editorial selection and audience attention, not incidence. Recall of reported incidents can rise while the underlying rate falls.

In a product retrospective

Our biggest risk is a security breach — that's what everyone talks about.

Why it fails: Salience is standing in for a risk assessment. The failures that actually take systems down are often unglamorous and therefore under-discussed and under-planned-for.

How is the availability heuristic different from confirmation bias?
Availability concerns how easily examples come to mind and distorts frequency estimates. Confirmation bias concerns which evidence you seek and how you weigh it, and distorts belief evaluation. They can compound — readily recalled examples tend to be ones that fit existing beliefs — but the mechanisms are distinct.
Does the availability heuristic explain fear of flying?
It is a substantial part of it. Air disasters receive extensive international coverage and are highly memorable, so examples are retrieved easily despite being rare. Other factors matter too — lack of control and the concentrated nature of the risk both amplify the fear beyond what availability alone predicts.
Can availability work in the opposite direction?
Yes. Risks that are common but rarely discussed — chronic disease, ordinary household accidents — are systematically underestimated because examples do not come readily to mind. The bias distorts in both directions; it simply follows salience rather than frequency in either case.
